Like other neurotransmitters, the presence of neurotransmitters determines the conduction of impulses between neurons. Because of its inhibitory function, GABA can induce calm in cases of overactivity and reduce stress and anxiety responses. GABA also plays a role in relaxation, which helps you fall asleep.

Read more about others here neurotransmitters and nutrition

How exactly GABA works

Watch the video below for a detailed explanation of how GABA inhibits stimulus transmission via the GABA receptors.

Do you have too little GABA?

A GABA deficiency can cause a variety of symptoms, ranging from muscle tension and difficulty falling asleep to depression. GABA is therefore used to treat ADHD, high blood pressure, sleep disorders, anxiety disorders, and stress. During the registration and intake for trip therapy, a neurotransmitter test is performed to determine whether you have a GABA deficiency, among other things. This allows us to provide advice on how to balance your neurotransmitters before conducting a psychedelic session.

Increase GABA

Increasing GABA levels can be achieved through diet and supplements. Combining GABA with medications such as benzodiazepines, barbiturates, antidepressants, or alcohol can be problematic, and concurrent use is not recommended. Caution should also be exercised with products that may increase the risk of bleeding.

Nutrition and GABA

GABA concentrations can be increased by eating fatty fish, broccoli, bananas, almonds, walnuts, spinach, and whole grains. With a varied diet low in sugar and high in protein, green vegetables, and complex carbohydrates, GABA supplementation is generally unnecessary.

GABA supplements

Temporary GABA supplementation can often be a good start. The following supplements will help you get GABA back to the desired level.

GABA
Vitamin B complex for support
Magnesium for support
Protein powder if protein intake is low

Activities for more GABA

Cuddling not only increases GABA levels but also dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin. All these substances improve a person's mood. Playing music or dancing also increases GABA, among other things. Walking in a natural environment and meditation also provide peace and can also increase GABA.

Psychedelic therapy for more GABA

Psychedelic therapy can indirectly improve GABA production by suppressing stress. Stress, which is partly responsible for cortisol, increases the use of building blocks and auxiliary substances from several neurotransmitters. Therefore, the stress-reducing properties can indirectly reduce GABA deficiency. The combination of diet, supplementation, and psychedelic therapy generally works even better.

Gamma-aminoboterzuur GABA staat voor Gamma-aminoboterzuur en is een neurotransmitter met een inhiberende functie op het zenuwstelsel.
