DOSE stands for dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin and endorphin. In this blog we are going to talk about dopamine and how you can become happier by getting dopamine into balance. More about oxytocin and endorphin will follow soon.

Exhausted

Dopamine is an important neurotransmitter that helps to keep our brain's reward and pleasure centres under control. It also keeps us motivated and focused, so that we can work towards achieving our goals.

Chemical designation of dopamine

Symptoms of a dopamine deficiency

Signs of low dopamine include difficulty making decisions, low libido, fatigue, depression, an inability to cope with stress, poor concentration and memory, mood swings, a lack of motivation, and failing to complete tasks or work towards goals. Furthermore, you can develop a sugar dependency, which causes dopamine and serotonin levels to drop (further). As a result, you are even more susceptible to addiction.
Those with an addiction may also have a low dopamine level, because triggering addictive behaviour is one of the body's shortcuts to increasing dopamine levels in the brain. In conditions such as ADD and ADHD, the level of dopamine can be low or conversely too high in relation to other neurotransmitters. People with ADD and ADHD are on average 20 times more susceptible to addictions. These are specifically addictions in which dopamine levels temporarily rise, such as alcohol, smoking, cocaine, MDMA/ecstasy, heroin, gambling and sex addiction.

Symptoms of a dopamine excess

Anorexia, other eating disorders and hyperactivity can be a consequence of too high a dopamine level. However, we would like to emphasise that too high a dopamine level causes fewer problems if it is more in balance with other neurotransmitters, and particularly serotonin. Too much dopamine has been linked to menstrual disorders, delayed puberty, infertility and reduced immunity.

According to the British Journal of Nursing, elevated dopamine in the limbic system is linked to schizophrenia, paranoia and withdrawal from social situations. Drugs such as amphetamines and cocaine cause a build-up of dopamine, leading to drug-induced psychosis or schizophrenia.
High concentrations of dopamine in the brain are found in patients with ADHD and Parkinson's disease. These individuals with an elevated dopamine level in the brain were more likely to act impulsively with the need for immediate gratification and addictions.

We would like to add to this story that an elevated dopamine level causes many fewer to no problems if dopamine can be better converted into noradrenaline and adrenaline. This improves the balance between serotonin, dopamine, and noradrenaline, allowing you to live in contentment.

Balancing dopamine naturally

Set achievable short- and long-term goals.

Meditation in any form.

Drink as little alcohol as possible. Bear in mind that half a glass of red wine a day is the absolute most a person can drink without doing too much damage.

Listen to your favourite music.

Physical contact with other living beings. For example, contact with pets, cuddling or massages.

A healthy dose of sunlight for more vitamin D3, serotonin and dopamine

Avoid empty calories, particularly sugars, and replace them with slow-release carbohydrates from sources such as vegetables.

Avoid Omega 6 fats (vegetable oils) and increase Omega 3 intake (this helps against 90% of lifestyle diseases)

Increase your turmeric intake in combination with black pepper. This duo already boosts 3 happy hormones and prevents certain types of cancer.

Take a good multivitamin. For example, vitamin B complex, zinc, magnesium, manganese and copper also help to boost your serotonin levels.

Tyrosine-rich foods such as almonds, pumpkin seeds, avocado, banana, fresh unsweetened dairy and fresh lean meat.

Probiotics in the form of yoghurt, kefir or supplement.

Bid social media farewell.

Turn off your smartphone an hour before going to bed and use it as little as possible during the day.

Do not drink coffee, but green tea.

Do something creative.

Good nutrition, good nutrition and yet more good nutrition!

Correcting too much dopamine

Complaints mainly arise when dopamine is too high in relation to serotonin and noradrenaline. A better balance can then be found by increasing serotonin.

You support the balance between dopamine and noradrenaline by increasing your intake of copper and vitamin C. This can be done with pulses, nuts and seeds.

Afterword

As you can read, your lifestyle and gut flora have a massive influence on your dopamine levels and mood. Most strikingly, the bacteria in your gut influence your mood and behaviour by producing or not producing signalling molecules that determine whether or not you feel happy. So, look after your gut and, as a first step, make sure you have the right bacteria in your gut by taking a probiotic sometime. A very good probiotic is, for example, Ultra Jarro Dophilus. Following this course of probiotics, which you only do once, you provide those bacteria and yourself with the right nutrition and dietary fibre mainly from vegetables, pulses, nuts, moderate amounts of fruit and a little wholegrain produce such as porridge oats.

Alongside these foods, there are natural MAO inhibitors that ensure, among other things, that dopamine and serotonin are broken down less quickly. These come with a warning. If you have too many MAO inhibitors and/or in combination with psychoactive medications, complications can arise. Normal foods such as mature cheese, beer, wine, pickled herring, chicken liver, yeast, a lot of coffee, citrus fruits, figs, broad beans, chocolate or cream can cause headaches and nausea and even become toxic. Here are some mild natural MAO inhibitors that carry less risk: seaweed, turmeric, passionflower and rhodiola.

Warning: Never experiment with the stronger MAO inhibitors on your own, but always consult a specialist's expertise first, especially if you are already taking psychoactive medication.

You want to live more healthily and be happier, but you can't manage it

You go to a great deal of effort to live healthily and be happier, but it is not going well. If you relapse into your old pattern, you remain trapped in a negative spiral. An imbalance of neurotransmitters causes depression, poor eating and anxiety. The poor eating, depression and anxiety in turn cause a worsened balance of neurotransmitters. We provide a personal service with behavioural and nutritional advice. We test your neurotransmitters using an extensive questionnaire, and we take medication and psychological complaints into account.

In consultation, we can also carry out trip therapy using magic mushrooms or truffles, which allows you to break this negative spiral through a temporarily high serotonin level and introspection. Your self-esteem and self-love can increase as a result, meaning you will also take better care of yourself and those around you.

Start intake

Dopamine is één van vier belangrijke gelukshormonen/neurotransmitters DOSE is de afkorting van de gelukshormonen/neurotransmitters die uw stemming het meeste beïnvloeden.
