What is the advised gap between two psychedelic sessions?
There’s no one-size-fits-all rule for the time between psychedelic sessions, but at Triptherapie the ideal interval depends on the substance used and the depth of the work.
When MDMA is involved, you can have a maximum of six sessions per year. This usually means about one session every two months, though sometimes people choose a shorter gap of around four weeks between a couple of sessions and have a longer rest period after three sessions. This limit isn’t just about safety for your brain chemistry — it also allows enough time to integrate the emotional breakthroughs that MDMA-assisted therapy can bring.
When it comes to psilocybin or LSD, you can technically repeat sessions every two weeks without tolerance being an issue. However, we still recommend leaving one to two months between sessions. That extra time helps you get the most out of the integration process, and it lets the longer-term positive effects of these substances keep unfolding in your daily life.
The ideal gap between psychedelic sessions depends on the substance and the purpose of use. The main reasons for waiting are to allow tolerance to reset and to give yourself time for psychological integration. Too frequent use not only dulls the effects but can also overwhelm the mind and body.
Both psilocybin and LSD build tolerance quickly. A week is usually enough for receptors to reset, but most therapists and experienced users recommend waiting at least 2–4 weeks. Clinical studies often space sessions about a month apart, and many people prefer several months to let insights settle.
MDMA depletes serotonin and needs longer recovery. Clinical protocols use a minimum of 3–5 weeks between sessions, and many therapists advise 1–3 months. Recreational harm-reduction guidelines warn against rolling more than a few times per year to avoid tolerance and long-term mood problems.
Ayahuasca can be used on consecutive nights during retreats, but traditionally followed by a long break. Tolerance resets in a few days, yet the depth of the experience requires much longer integration. Many traditions recommend once or twice a year, while modern retreat settings often suggest waiting months after a series of ceremonies.
Although the minimum reset time for tolerance is about one week for psilocybin and LSD, several weeks for MDMA, and a few days for ayahuasca, the advised gap is much longer. For most people, the sweet spot is at least a month between sessions and often several months, ensuring both safety and the full benefit of integration.
I would say 4 weeks i between session with a moderate to high dose LSD and or psilocybin gives you enough time to integrate te experience and the tolerance to reset. If you do only low dosed session you can try it every week or two weeks. For MDMA it's better to have at least 8 weeks in between of sessions.
