Is psilohuasca legal in the Netherlands?
Yes, psilohuasca is currently legal in the Netherlands, but with some nuances. The key psychedelic component — psilocybin — is derived from magic truffles, which are legal in the Netherlands. The legality of psilohuasca depends on how it is prepared.
Traditional psilohuasca combines psilocybin-containing truffles or mushrooms with a MAO inhibitor (MAOi), typically Banisteriopsis Caapi, the same vine used in ayahuasca. While psilocybin truffles are legal, Banisteriopsis Caapi itself is also legal, as long as it is not combined with DMT (as in traditional ayahuasca). Therefore, a psilohuasca ceremony using legal truffles and Banisteriopsis Caapi is not explicitly banned.
However, it's important to know that using MAO inhibitors comes with health risks, such as dangerous interactions with certain foods (high in tyramine) and medications. This is why during our psilohuasca ceremonies we give the opion to use strong MAOIs , but also offer milder alternatives like Passiflora incarnata (passionflower). This milder version is called psiloflora and offers similar benefits (a deeper, longer trip) without the legal or health complications of traditional psilohuasca.
So, to sum up: psilohuasca is legal when made with truffles and MAOIs like Banisteriopsis Caapi, but it requires careful preparation and screening. Safer alternatives like psiloflora are more commonly used in therapeutic settings in the Netherlands.
