Are there any risks of lasting effects after the psilocybin session (flashbacks, confusion, etc.)?

In general, long-term negative effects such as flashbacks, ongoing confusion, or Hallucinogen Persisting Perception Disorder (HPPD) are extremely rare, especially in a therapeutic setting like psychedelic therapy.

Most participants actually experience lasting positive effects — greater emotional clarity, reduced symptoms of depression or anxiety, and an enhanced sense of connection. However, there are a few exceptions:

  1. Flashbacks or visual afterimages can occasionally occur, particularly in individuals with a history of psychosis, trauma, or dissociative disorders. These are usually short-lived and fade on their own.

  2. Confusion or emotional instability is more likely if the session is poorly prepared or not properly integrated afterward. This is why post-session integration — reflecting on and processing your experience — is essential.

  3. HPPD (Hallucinogen Persisting Perception Disorder) is an extremely rare condition where visual distortions or afterimages persist for months. It is mostly reported in cases of frequent recreational use (mostly with LSD), not from professionally guided therapeutic sessions.

The risk of these effects is greatly reduced through proper preparation, a safe and supportive setting, and professional guidance. The Triptherapie intake process is designed to carefully assess whether a psychedelic session is suitable and safe for you.
