Hi! I have a question… I got a MS diagnosis 2 years ago and I’m taking the drug Tysabri (I’m getting treatment every sixth week at the hospital). I wonder if anybody knows if it’s a bad idea for me to take shrooms? The combination of tysabri and psilocybin?
@holly
Hi,
There seems to be no active interaction between tysabri and psychedelics. On a sidenote: Mushrooms in general can activate the autoimmune-system to become more active and that can be a problem with autoimmune-diseases, but most activation is present whilst protecting body-tissues.
Most MS treatments surpresses the immune-system. I think you should ask the doctor who precribes you the medication.
There are currently no known direct interactions between psilocybin and Tysabri (natalizumab), the medication you’re receiving for MS. However, that doesn’t automatically mean the combination is entirely safe — especially since Tysabri is an immune-modulating drug that acts on the central nervous system. It's important to approach this carefully, considering both potential risks and theoretical benefits.
One promising aspect is that psilocybin has been shown to increase levels of BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor), which supports the growth, repair, and survival of neurons. This could be beneficial in neurodegenerative diseases like MS. According to another discussion, psilocybin may also reduce neuroinflammation and promote neuroplasticity — both of which are highly relevant for MS.
Additionally, a forum thread about psilocybin and MS mentions a small 2019 study in people with advanced MS. While the study didn’t focus on MS progression itself, it did report reduced depression and anxiety symptoms, along with improved quality of life for several weeks post-treatment.
Another Triptherapie discussion covers combining psilocybin with other MS meds like Copaxone. The takeaway is that if your current treatment doesn’t cause serious issues with heart, brain, or liver function, psilocybin might not pose an immediate risk — but any decision should be based on your personal health status.
Recommendation: Definitely speak with your neurologist or MS nurse specialist before proceeding. Let them know you’re considering psilocybin, and ask about potential interactions or concerns given your immune system and medication schedule.
If you do decide to explore psilocybin, doing so in a supported, therapeutic setting — like a guided psilocybin session through Triptherapie — can help reduce risks and enhance the experience, especially if you have a neurological condition.
