My husband is going to 'take the trip'. He is quite uncertain with his English and wants me to be there to translate if necessary - is that possible during a prvate therapy session?
Yes, absolutely — during a private psilocybin therapy session you are very welcome to be present as a trusted companion and translator for your husband. This is especially encouraged when there are language barriers or emotional vulnerabilities involved.
Here’s how your role as a translator would typically work:
Before the session: You can help translate during the intake conversation and any preparatory discussions with the therapist. This ensures your husband fully understands the process, sets his intentions clearly, and feels safe and informed.
During the session: While the therapist leads the session, your presence as a calm and supportive translator is welcome. Most of the inner journey is silent and introspective, but in moments where communication is needed (especially before or after the peak of the trip), you can assist if your husband has difficulty expressing himself in English.
After the session: During integration, when reflecting on the experience and discussing insights, you can again translate if necessary to help articulate feelings or experiences.
This setup has been used successfully by non-Dutch and non-English speakers before. Just make sure to mention your translator role in the intake. If you're helping fill it out on his behalf, you can note that you're his trusted translator and will be present during the session.
There is no extra charge for bringing a non-participating trusted person to a private session. Let us know beforehand when you someone wants to be present during a private session.
For optimal comfort, the therapist will take your presence into account when preparing the session, and will also make sure the environment allows your husband to relax and focus inward, even if he needs help expressing himself at certain points.
If you're planning to attend, it's a good idea to mention it when filling out the Triptherapie intake form, so the team can tailor the session accordingly.
