Yes and no. When you do a magic or psilocybin mushroom session in the Netherlands, you'll probably be consuming magic truffles. In the Netherlands, psilocybin mushrooms are classified as illegal substances, while magic truffles, which contain the same active compounds (psilocybin and psilocine), are legal. This legal distinction allows individuals to experience the effects of psilocybin through magic truffles in a controlled and therapeutic environment. Therefore, while traditional psilocybin mushrooms are not permitted, magic truffles provide a legal alternative for those seeking similar experiences.

Magic truffles are the part of magic mushrooms that grow below the ground. They are known as sclerotia, which is a compact, bulbous mass of mycelium and nutrients that forms underground in response to adverse conditions such as drought and food shortages. This formation serves as a survival mechanism for the mushrooms, allowing them to endure unfavorable environmental conditions. The sclerotia contains the same psychoactive compounds as the above-ground mushrooms, specifically psilocybin and psilocine, which are responsible for their hallucinogenic effects.

In Amsterdam, you cannot legally do a session with psilocybin mushrooms (also known as magic mushrooms), as they are officially prohibited under Dutch drug laws. However — and this is key — you can have a fully legal psilocybin experience using magic truffles, which contain exactly the same active compounds: psilocybin and psilocin.

At Triptherapie, we use these magic truffles in guided sessions that can be therapeutic or spiritual in nature. Truffles are actually the underground part of the mushrooms (called sclerotia), and because of a legal loophole, they are not banned — which makes them legal in the Netherlands.

Experienced facilitators like Marcel or Sascha offer these sessions in Amsterdam. You can choose to have the session in your home, at a hotel, or in a rented space. The focus of the session can be introspection, trauma healing, depression, anxiety, or personal growth.

The only difference from "shrooms" is the form — the effects of truffles are identical to those of mushrooms, as they contain the same psychoactive compounds. With the right guidance and dose, you can expect the same visual and emotional depth.

Curious whether such a session is right for you? You can fill out the intake form for a psilocybin session — free and non-binding — so your mental and physical health can be professionally assessed.
