Many questions about medication and trip therapy
We regularly receive questions on the forum about whether trip therapy can be combined with certain medications. For example, we receive questions about:;
Can I do a mushroom trip therapy if I use Bisoprolol Fumarate?
Can Prozac and psychedelics be used together or should they also be discontinued?
In trip therapy, we use psilocybin-containing mushrooms (magic mushrooms) and sclerotia (magic truffles). Although mushrooms and truffles are the least harmful drugs, medication should indeed be taken into account.

Combination medications and psilocybin
The image below clearly illustrates when we should be wary of combining medication with trip therapy. The "mushrooms" section can be considered trip therapy, as we use psilocybin, which is also found in magic mushrooms.

Tramadol and psilocybin
We cannot offer trip therapy if Tramadol is being used. For short-term use, you can stop immediately. For long-term use, reduce the dose over a period of two weeks, followed by two weeks of non-trip therapy.
Antidepressants and psilocybin
We advise against trip therapy for SSRI and MAOI (MAOI) medications, despite the low risk of complications. It's best to start with a tapering period* combined with serotonin-boosting activities and nutrition or supplements. This way, trip therapy can be the start of a medication-free life.
What's not mentioned, but should be mentioned, is that no psychedelics should be used when using lithium. Lithium medication must be tapered off* before a trip can occur.
* Tapering off this medication can be a mentally draining process that requires specialist support. Always consult your prescriber first.
Recently, SNRI and SSRIs no longer need to be tapered off. You can read more about this via the following link:
Medication for cardiovascular function and psilocybin
In most cases, this doesn't pose a problem. Keep in mind, however, that psilocybin use slightly increases blood pressure. Ideally, follow a blood pressure-lowering diet to reduce medication use and further reduce the small risk of complications.
Sedatives and sleeping pills and psilocybin
Benzodiazepines are benzos or meds like diazepam and are sedatives. This group of medications carries a slightly increased risk and can make a trip less effective. It is recommended to taper off the medication first with expert support.
Psilocybin and recreational drugs
Combining Triptherapie with cannabis, amphetamines, and cocaine is unnecessarily dangerous and we will never facilitate it. Combining it with other drugs, such as alcohol and the body-damaging GHB/GBL, is less dangerous, and we do not do this because the goal of trip therapy, which is to become healthier, is then not achieved. Any unnecessary substance use should be avoided in the two weeks before the trip therapy session to achieve the best results without any risks to physical and mental well-being.
Conclusion
Using psilocybin alone is very safe. In combination with medication or other drugs, only a few combinations are truly unsafe. However, it's wise to first wean yourself off medication by adopting a healthier lifestyle and only then undergo a trip therapy session to address the psychological issues. Ultimately, your body is your most valuable asset. Take care of it by taking good care of it.
