Many questions about medication and trip therapy
We regularly receive questions via the forum about whether trip therapy can be combined with certain medications. For example, we receive questions about;
Can I do a mushroom trip therapy if I use Bisoprolol fumarate?
Can Prozac and psychedelics be used together or should they also be reduced?
In trip therapy we use psilocybin-containing mushrooms (magic mushrooms) and sclerotia (magic truffles). Although magic mushrooms and truffles are the least harmful drugs, medication must indeed be taken into account.
Combination medicines and psilocybin
The image below clearly indicates when we should pay attention to medication in combination with trip therapy. The cup of mushrooms can be seen as trip therapy since we use psilocybin, which is also found in magic mushrooms.
Tramadol and psilocybin
We cannot offer trip therapy if Tramadol is used. For short-term use you can stop immediately and for long-term use you can reduce this over a period of 2 weeks and then do not use it for trip therapy for 2 weeks.
Antidepressants and psilocybin
We do not recommend trip therapy for medication with SSRI and MAOI (MAOIs), despite the low risk of complications. It is best to first start with a reduction period* in combination with serotonin-enhancing activities and nutrition or supplements. In this way, trip therapy can be a start to a medication-free life.
What is not stated, but must be stated, is that no psychedelics should be used when using Lithium. Lithium medication must first be reduced* before a trip can take place.
* Reducing this medication can be a debilitating process for the psyche that requires support from a specialist. Always contact the person prescribing the medication first.
Recently, SNRI and SSRI no longer need to be reduced. You can read more about it via the following link:
Medication for cardiovascular function and psilocybin
In most cases this does not pose a problem. Keep in mind that the use of psilocybin increases blood pressure slightly. It would be ideal to follow a blood pressure lowering diet to reduce medication use and to further reduce the small risk of complications.
Sedatives and sleeping pills and psilocybin
Benzodiazepines are benzos or pills such as Diazepam and are sedative medications. This group of medications poses a slightly increased risk and makes a trip work less well. The advice is to first phase out with the support of an expert.
Psilocybin and recreational drugs
Combining trip therapy with cannabis, amphetamines, and cocaine is unnecessarily dangerous and we will never facilitate it. What is less dangerous is combining it with other drugs such as alcohol and the body-debilitating GHB/GBL and we do not do this because the goal of trip therapy is not pursued, which is to become healthier. Any kind of unnecessary substance use should be avoided in the two weeks before the trip therapy session to achieve the best results without risks to physical and mental well-being.
Conclusion
Mono use of psilocybin is very safe. In combination with medication or other drugs, there are only a few combinations that are truly unsafe. However, it is wise to first get rid of medication by adopting a healthier lifestyle and only then do a trip therapy session to connect the psychological dots and cross the i's. Ultimately, your body is your most valuable asset. Take care of it by being good to it.
