The effects of the hippie flip
The effects of MDMA combined with psilocybin can vary from person to person. Generally, the hallucinogenic effects of psilocybin are strong, and the anti-anxiety properties of MDMA foster greater confidence. Due to a higher degree of surrender, these trips can be more profound than those with a strong need for control. The emotional experience during the hippie flip is more positive, due to the stimulating effect of MDMA.
'Hippie flipping'
The hippie flip is a combination of magic mushrooms or truffles with MDMA. Those who choose to combine these psychedelics do so primarily for MDMA's anxiolytic effects. Reducing anxiety while using psilocybin, for example, during a truffle session, can facilitate a psychedelic trip. We're seeing an increase in requests for the hippie flip from people who want a psychedelic trip but experience significant anxiety and a need for control.
Effects of MDMA
The effect of MDMA during the hippie flip creates a sense of security, increased empathy, and a stronger sense of connection after the onset of the effects. MDMA also enhances the effects of psilocybin by releasing more serotonin.
Effects of psilocybin
Psilocybin adds more color to the hippie flip by adding visual hallucinations. Psilocybin also increases the likelihood of a spiritual or mystical experience because it can diminish the sense of self (the ego) and foster greater connection through the senses.
Hippie flip and scientific studies
According to a scientific study published in August 2023, a small addition of MDMA to the psilocybin experience can significantly increase the chance of compassion and reduce the chance of a spiritual or mystical experience.
Another outcome is about experiencing challenging experiences/bad trips. Concomitant use of MDMA with psilocybin was associated with significant differences in the likelihood of a bad trip. Compared to using psilocybin alone, psilocybin gave alow dose MDMA a significantly lower chance of a negative experience. Remarkably, there was no significant difference between the use of psilocybin alone and the addition of a high dose MDMA.
This study also found that the hippie flip resulted in experiencing more self-compassion, feelings of love, and feelings of gratitude than the single-drug use of psilocybin itself. These positive effects of MDMA on a psilocybin experience were also dosage-dependent. Although this study was relatively small, it does offer insights into what a possible good dosage might be for the hippie flip sessions.
Psilocybin and MDMA dosages
According to scientific research, the key to an effective hippie flip is the dosage and the ratio of MDMA to psilocybin. At Triptherapie, we've often worked with MDMA, psilocybin, and the combination of the two. Although research suggests that 30-50 mg of MDMA is the optimal dosage for hippie flipping, we often see significant benefits when the dosage increases to 100 mg. For now, the correct MDMA dosage for hippie flipping seems to be between 50 and 150 mg, and this varies from person to person. The ideal psilocybin dosage depends on the desired strength of the trip and personal sensitivity and is estimated at 15 to 45 mg.

By adjusting the MDMA or psilocybin dosages, we can, for example, increase or decrease the likelihood of ego loss and a spiritual experience. The anti-anxiety effect of MDMA on a psilocybin experience can also be controlled by adjusting the dosages.
Risks of MDMA with psilocybin
The hippie flip is a combination of psilocybin and MDMA. These two psychedelic substances influence the serotonergic receptors (5HT), among other things, and can enhance each other's effects. Finding the right dosage for this combination is important. Furthermore, the contraindications of both MDMA and psilocybin should be considered if you want to try this polydrug combination. While psilocybin is a relatively safe substance, MDMA has more potential interactions with other medications that can be dangerous.
