In the Netherlands, the legal status of ayahuasca retreats can be complex due to the specific components involved. Ayahuasca is a psychoactive brew typically containing the hallucinogenic compound dimethyltryptamine (DMT), which is classified as a Schedule I substance and is illegal in the Netherlands. Therefore, ayahuasca brews that include DMT in their brew would be considered illegal. Ayahuasca brews without DMT are not so popular.

However, it is important to note that there are legal alternatives available in the Netherlands. One such alternative is psiloflora, a psychoactive brew that does not contain DMT. Psiloflora is made from the combination of psilocybin-containing mushrooms and other plant ingredients. As psilocybin mushrooms (truffles) are not classified as illegal in the Netherlands, our retreats with psiloflora mimics the effects of ayahuasca while it's legal and in most cases a better experience.

The difference:

Psiloflora and ayahuasca offer distinct experiences primarily due to their active ingredients, and legal status. The experience with ayahuasca is often described as intense and less controllable, as it typically involves a deep, immersive journey that can be overwhelming for some users.

In contrast, psiloflora is a combination of psilocybin (from magic truffles) and a milder MAO inhibitor from the passionflower (Passiflora incarnata). This combination is legal in the Netherlands and is associated with a more manageable experience. Users often report that psiloflora allows for a degree of control during the trip, making it suitable for individuals who may find ayahuasca too intense. Additionally, psiloflora is noted for having fewer side effects, such as nausea, and does not require a strict diet before or after consumption, unlike ayahuasca.

The Netherlands currently prohibits ayahuasca retreats under a stringent interpretation of international drug control treaties, despite limited evidence of public health risks associated with regulated ceremonial use. While underground operations persist, participants face significant legal and health hazards. Dutch residents seeking ayahuasca experiences must consider international alternatives, prioritizing jurisdictions with clear legal frameworks and ethical practices. Future legal developments, particularly in human rights courts, may reshape this landscape, but as of 2025, ayahuasca retreats remain illegal within Dutch territory.
