From 1 July 2025, we can no longer dispense MDMA analogue

Note: For the MDMA sessions, we often provided a legal analogue until 1 July 2025. Due to an amendment to this opium law, these MDMA analogues have also become illegal to provide, possess or trade. Click on the link if you are curious about alternative solutions and conditions on how we do guide you during a session with substances such as MDMA or substances similar to it.

Why the opium law list 1A?

The expansion of the Opium Act with List 1A by 1 July 2025 stems from the introduction of the NPS Act (New Psychoactive Substances). The reason for this legislation is the rapid rise of so-called designer drugs, substances that fell just outside existing legislation but are similar in effect to well-known drugs such as MDMA.

There are four main reasons why this law was introduced:

  1. Prevention and public health: By banning chemically related groups of substances at once, the government wants to prevent potentially dangerous substances from entering the market before harm occurs.

  2. The producer before his: Producers of NPS adjusted molecules ever so slightly to remain legal. With this new, generic approach, even those minor variations fall directly under the ban.

  3. International pressure: The Netherlands was seen internationally as a base for the production of these drugs. The new law is more in line with the European approach and helps combat cross-border trafficking.

  4. More efficient detectionPolice and judiciary no longer have to wait for individual risk assessments per substance, which speeds up the work process and simplifies enforcement.

What is still possible now?

Despite the banning of many MDMA analogues under List 1A of the Opium Act, several legal and safe options still remain available for those interested in psychedelic therapy or an alternative MDMA experience. There are several options such as opting for legal psychedelics like psilocybin (truffles), legal LSD analogues or substances similar to MDMA but legal. For people who possess MDMA themselves, there are also opportunities to use us as a trip sitter.

Using your own MDMA

Although MDMA and its analogues fall under List 1 or 1A of the Opium Act in the Netherlands and possession is therefore punishable, the use itself is in practice not prosecuted. This creates space to responsibly support people who consciously choose to use MDMA during a guided session.

Dutch law distinguishes between use and possession. Actually taking MDMA is not formally punishable. Possessing, buying, selling, making or transporting it is. According to the Guideline for criminal procedure Opium Act of the public prosecutor's office, a quantity of up to 0.5 grams or one pill classified as a 'small quantity' for personal use. In most cases, this only leads to seizure, but not criminal prosecution.

From a harm-reduction approach we do not turn away clients who choose to bring their own small amount of MDMA or an MDMA analogue to a session. We believe that people who consciously do so are better off under professional supervision than alone or unprepared. During such a session, we act as tripsitter: we support safety, provide psychological guidance and ensure an optimal setting, without supplying or owning the material.

However, we do set some important conditions:

  • You have maximum 500 mg MDMA (analogue) in possession;

  • The drug is pre-tested, for example through an accredited testing service;

  • You give clearly indicate that it is your own initiative and is the means of and for yourself;

  • You know that we mainly have a lot of experience with MDMA, 5-MAPB, 6-APB, and methallylescalin when it comes to empathogenic drugs and that others than these mentioned may carry more risks;
  • We take no responsibility for quality or origin of the remedy.

Should you wish to use our services, please make it known which substance you want to use yourself. You can mention this in the intake and/or when booking a psychedelic session.

Legal MDMA alternatives with similar effects

MDMA and its analogues have unique and strong effects that are difficult to match with other natural and or legal alternatives. At the moment, though, we are looking and testing other substances. Before we can offer a good and legal alternative, we must have tested it properly. We will provide an update as more information becomes available on this in the coming months.

Other psychedelics with overlap in efficacy

Psilocybin, present in legal magic truffles, is legal in the Netherlands and is provided by us during a psilocybin session or truffle session. Like MDMA, this substance stimulates serotonergic activity and can lead to deep introspection, processing of trauma and a sense of connection. A unique feature of psilocybin is that it increases neuroplasticity and can help break depressive thought patterns.

For those looking for an even deeper and spiritually charged experience, the psiloflora ceremony offers a powerful alternative. Combining psilocybin with passionflower (a mild MAOI) not only prolongs the trip up to seven hours, but also makes it more intense, visual and calm. Psiloflora is ideally suited for people who want the intensity of an ayahuasca-like experience, but without the physical strain and strict dietary restrictions.

We also deploy LSD sessions at Triptherapie, using a legal LSD analogue that is converted to active LSD in the body. LSD has a longer duration of action and is often chosen by people who want to work therapeutically on creativity, patterns and meaning. Unlike psilocybin, with LSD the emphasis is less on emotional catharsis and more on insight, visualisation and breaking through mental structures.

Each substance has its own character and therapeutic potential. During the intake, we will help you determine what kind of session best suits your intention, experience and mental state.
