Ego therapy

What is the ego?

Everything that makes you an individual falls under the ego. It is the I in contrast to everything that is outside the body and thoughts. The ego ensures that an individual can survive by assessing all situations and making a “safe” choice. Unfortunately, the ego takes this survival very hard. So heavy that it can even cause your conscious thought pattern to be blocked by the subconscious ego. All this just to survive. The subconscious ego uses all data stored in the form of memories and what is stored in the DNA. Fear of everything that is not an easy way of surviving (the familiar that does not kill you) is a very strong advisor for the ego.

When is the ego good?

The ego ensures that you survive. The fear of being killed by fast-moving objects like a car has its advantages. It prevents pain and possibly death. These processes of the ego ensure a higher chance of survival and work in the subconscious. If a hand is accidentally placed on a hot pan, the hand is gone before the physical pain is felt. So these forms of ego self-protection are useful.

 

When is the ego less good?

The older one gets, the more the ego realizes what an easy and also cowardly way of life is. Past fears determine the reluctance to live. Fear becomes a limitation and the fear is often no longer realistic for the current time. Being stuck in a pattern that allows one to survive but does not give the feeling of living can lead to psychological complaints such as: depression, fear or burnout. Who is in charge in life? If the ego makes the wrong decisions and limits life, it is difficult to figure it out alone.

Sometimes you only see the big picture when you stand further away from it. By experiencing an ego-less experience, in English ego-death, one can regain control. During an ego death, the sense of one's own self fades. One sees oneself as belonging to a larger entity, which is the universe. Yet the decisions of the ego can then be viewed from a “distance” and why they no longer serve the individual. Adjusting the lifestyle from that moment on becomes easier, partly thanks to the loss of fear and the ability to put things into perspective during the ego death. It seems like everything makes sense and it's illogical to let someone block themselves from loving life.
